Literacy Learning & Instruction in All Classrooms

The Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts & Literacy in History/Social Studies, Science, and Technical Subjects provide a clear progression of vital literacy skills as a guide for teachers as they plan grade appropriate differentiated instruction.  Effective literacy instruction that is aligned with the Common Core State Standards provides opportunities for students to acquire, develop and master the skills necessary to read, write, speak, listen, and use language effectively through the gradual release of responsibility for learning from the teacher to the student.

In the following instructional blueprints for all levels, Durham Public Schools provides a clear guide for the necessary components of effective literacy instruction and suggested time allocations for each component.  An instruction blueprint for secondary content area literacy instruction is included as a concrete model for infusing rigorous literacy instruction into all content area classrooms.
